Dear Students,
Based on the scenes you saw from 'My Fair Lady' answer the following questions.
(1) What is the profession of Prof.Higgins?
(2) What is 'Suffragette'? (This is shown in the Alfie's song 'with a little bit of luck')
(3) Give an example for mother tongue influence on our spoken English. (like Elize leaving our Hs when speaks words starting with 'H')
(4) Can you think of any other movie with similar theme?
(5) Speaking English with regional accent is right or wrong? Why?

Well I’m the first one to comment which makes me immensely happy.
Ans 1:
Professor Higgins specializes in phonetics
Ans 2:
Suffragette is a person who wants voting rites for women
Ans 3:
There are lots of examples of mother tongue influence in English
for e.g. Bengalis always use an extra 'o' sound with English alphabets. Plus their English ,however well educated they are is highly accented. Even keralites have this problem
PPl who speak telugu fluently have the habit of adding 'u' sound with most English words. Some commonly mis pronounced words
Business -bigness
School -iskool
nightmare- nightiemare
carpet-carbed
selfish -shellfish
stupid- stoopid
coffee -kapi
veterinary -vet-nary
doctor- daacter
In the Indian subcontinent i think the degree to which mother tongue influences English is in the following order:
1. kerala
2.west Bengal
3.telugu
4.punjab/haryana
with a little bit of practice we can easily identify a persons mother tongue ,from their English accent.
Ans 4:
My fair lady is a classic .so many would have been influenced by this movie and made similar movies. But i don’t think anyone could have matched original.
Ans 5:
Speaking English with a regional accent is right. Speaking our regional languages wit an English accent is not exactly wrong but its funny. English being an international is versatile. Every nation, culture has its own way of speaking English ,this is what makes English truly global. Its difficult to get rid of the regional accent in English .its not required. English is being given undue importance in our country. People tend to look down upon those who cannot communicate in english. This is not the case in most other developed countries, like France ,Germany and Japan. English, h owever badly spoken is considered superior to our regional tongues. Hope this trend changes in our nation. and.People should stop giving importance to the medium and start focusing on the ideas conveyed. Speaking English is like owning a nokia n96.Even if you don’t have a single call to make or no number to msg or your phone runs out of charge still it gains a lot of importance. But imagine yourself wit a simple nokia 1100 phone, now even if you head ISRO you still don’t stand out in the crowd and gain all that importance. It is the same thing that is happening to English in our country
At home my younger siblings are reminded to "SPEAk IN ENGLISH". Plus i don’t know to speak my mother tongue (telugu, feel ashamed to accept it ).As Indians I feel its really important to for us to adopt the tendency to communicate in the language we feel comfortable in.

3:french
some of the words combine with ENGLISH.
4:MY FAIR LADY is really interesting and it is a good example in our life.people who suffer to speak English with good punctuation and vocabulary can prefer this movie .moreover this is classic as said by swathi.
5:not all the country prefer to speak thier own regional language, and a perfect example is INDIA which overall depends on ENGLISH.This is because of the jobs offered.the jobs offered in our country mainly depends on the English language to communicate with other country. its like a"salt in a food"without salt the food may not be tasty .this kind of culture are followed in most of the country .
but some countries like france, germany etc differ ..
moreover Speaking English with a regional accent is right.Being versatile it spreads all over the world .
its the easy way to communicate.
hence i think its a important thing... .....?

Professor Higgins was a Phonetician.
Ans 2:
Suffragette is a women seeking the right to vote through organised protest.
Ans 3:
The influence of mother tongue in English is everywhere. Especially in state like Kerala, West Bengal, Andra Pradesh etc, this is very obvious when they speak. In Kerala the way they pronounce 'college' 'office' is quite funny. Even within Tamil Nadu this influence can be seen.
Ans 4:
This is a really good movie. I've read the story before watching the it. But I haven't seen a similar movie.
Ans 5:
There is nothing wrong in speaking English with a regional accent. It is common. There is no need of correcting this. In India speaking in English is very important no matter what your accent is. But this is not the case with other countries. Their regional languages comes first for them.Coming to general concepts of communication it is not important in what language you are communicating, it is important that everyone understands what you are trying to say. hope everyone understands this....
see you again...
bye guys...

Many People in India speaks in different Pronounciation of english for e.g. People from bengal, kerala, Andra Pradesh and some french people.
4.The movie My Fair Lady was very good and interesting too. I had already read this story in my my school day. I havn't seen a similar movie like this.
5.Speaking English with a regional accent, I can't say it is wrong. But some people who are well verse in the language can understand better. So in my point of view we don't need any accent to speak in english. If we Try to speak in the perfect pronounce is better than speaking in a stylish english.

Ans 1: Professor Higgins specializes in phonetics.
Ans 2: Suffragette refers to the woman who campaigned for women's right to vote in the early 20th century.
Ans 3: There are lots of mother tongue influences in English language. For example keralites usually pronounce auto as ‘otto’. Indians. Chinese, French make their mother tongue influence in English. Since English is a foreign language, we make the words comfortable to us and pronounce it differently.
Ans 4: No I didn’t see a similar film. The film was very nice and I know the story already. It was a nice film to watch.
Ans 5: It’s not wrong in using regional accent to a foreign language. It is basically a foreign language and we are using it because of its popularity and impact on the global world. And our mother tongue plays an important role in understanding and learning a foreign language. So it gradually has an impact on the foreign language. The important thing in speaking is the grammar and the vocabulary of the language and nothing wrong in using a regional accent.

I felt that the movie was good but it was so lengthy...
1 Higgins was speacialized in phonetics nd also he teaches it.
2 Suffragette is a women who fights 4 the voting rights 4 women
3 malayalees pronounce 'collage' as 'kollage'. in tamil, the way in which the words like hospital, office, etc., are pronounced is funny.
4 I too know the story of MFL b4 watching it...the movie was good. I didnt watch any such flick till now.
5 regional language's accent in English is not wrong. we r using English only bcoz it is important in today's world to study the language. so using the language with correct grammar part alone is enough.

Hai Friends,

Ans 4:
No I dont.
Ans 5:
I think we cant say it is right or wrong . Everyone always feels comfort in ones own mother tongue. When they learn a foregin language and speak it is quite natural that they get influenced by their mother tongue. But it is not that only English , but spoiling any other languagu also is felt bad.

Hai friends, i feel very happy to meet u all in 2nd sem.
"MY FAIR LADY "is first of all a beautiful movie.
A(1): prof.higgins is very specialised in phonetics nd also he is very good at teaching.
A(2): suffragate means who wants voting rights for women.
A(3) :in our daily life we often use mother tounge wite english and also we some times we influences our mother toungue in english for (eg )we used to say kaapi for coffee etc...
A(4): There may be some movies similar to this movie but i don't know any thing exactly and also i didn't watch this movie completely so was not able to compare it with any other movies.
A(5): we can't say that speaking English is wrong with regional languages because in our country we Indians speak English more than our regional language since it has become the international language.
1. prof. higgins specialices in phonetics
2.The Suffragettes are those who wanted the right for women to vote
3.mother tongue has influenced english in ways like how it led to new words such as " catamaran " that originally came from the tamil word " kattumaram "
4.another movie which strikes me to have the same theme is Ms.congeniality , in which a female cop is trained to be lady- like in order to be beauty pageant contestant.
5. i wouldn't say that it is wrong because u really have no choice.when u are used to a certain way of speaking only since birth , and then when u learn a new language , you are bound to have the regional accent when u speak the new lang.
